African American hair comes in an almost infinite variety of textures, from curly to woolly, from kinky to wavy, from natural and thick to straight and sleek. But whatever its texture, Black African American hair is a gift that reflects both our beauty and our ancestry. Unfortunately, though, it’s often next to impossible to feel good about our hair. Why? Because it feels like we’re constantly at war with it.

The Basics

At some point in her life (or many times throughout her life!) virtually every woman wrestles with the question of natural versus relaxed/permed. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, but whatever the choice, it’s crucial to take care of your locks.

Good hair care starts from the inside out. That means eating a balanced diet to give your body all the nutrients it needs in order to grow the healthiest hair possible. It also means drinking plenty of water, to give your hair (and skin) much-needed moisture.

The Comb/Brush

The next critical element of hair care - regardless of your hair’s texture - is using the proper comb/brush. The truth is, the vast majority of combs and brushes are made for non-African American hair. The ideal tool for our hair is a combination comb/brush that is designed so that the teeth easily slide under our coiled hair texture. It’s like a detangler that works by rolling out the hair instead of pulling it out. In the process, it naturally conditions and relaxes hair, making it soft and easy to style or braid. This kind of comb/brush also keeps our hair healthy and helps prevent breakage.

Next Steps

In addition to having the proper comb/brush, there are several other things you can do to help prevent breakage. First, use heat sparingly, especially if your hair is permed. Second, don’t wash your hair too often - every seven to ten days is ideal. When you do wash it, use a leave-in conditioner. In between, rinse your hair once or twice a week (and especially after a workout), and use a conditioner every day. And, don’t neglect your monthly deep conditioning treatment.

Embrace Your Texture

The hairstyles you choose will change over the course of your lifetime, but the best hair care advice is to embrace your natural texture and work with it. Hair that is naturally curly will act very differently than hair that is naturally woolly. Similarly, super-kinky hair will respond in a different way to treatments than naturally wavy hair.

When you work with the texture you have, you can still have a variety of style choices available to you. But the key is that you won’t be constantly fighting nature; instead, you’ll be working with the African American texture you were born with and maximizing its beauty. In the process, you’ll have less breakage and healthier hair. The result? You’ll feel more beautiful and project that self-confidence to the world. What could be better?

Human Hair Wigs - How To Take Care of Your Long Hair Before Donating It

Posted under Hair Care by Kenny on Wednesday 14 May 2008

If you want to donate your hair or sell your hair for use in making human hair wigs, keeping it in the very best possible condition is crucial. There are many techniques for keeping long hair healthy. The goals in cutting long hair or hair that is being grown out are different than the goals behind cutting hair for style. Even if you are not selling or donating it, most people who have long hair want it to look as beautiful as it can, and keeping it in good condition will be just as important to them.

Above all, if you have long hair you must try to keep your hair free of damage or split ends. Be sure to trim your hair to even it out. After skipping too many haircuts long hair can become quite uneven. If you need to, you may want to change the style of your hair to eliminate more of the dry or damaged areas. This can be achieved without sacrificing length. Your hair can remain long and beautiful, while you improve its condition by cutting bangs and/or layers.

Hair grows at a relatively consistent rate. It is a myth that after a certain age the rate of hair growth slows. What is true is that when your body is less healthy, your hair will be less healthy; it will have to be cut (and not just trimmed) more often, and will not gain as much length as quickly as it could if your body and hair were in good health. Unhealthy hair will break when it is dry or damaged enough, and you will likely have to remove more damaged hair the next time you cut it.

Know what can damage your hair. If you know what kinds of things to avoid, because they are likely to worsen the condition of your hair, the more possible it is to significantly improve your hair. Environmental conditions, such as bright sunlight, heat, and dryness can contribute to damaged hair.

In addition, daily styling methods can also damage your hair. Using hair dryers, curling irons or flattening irons, hairspray and other styling products (especially when you do not wash the chemicals from styling products out of your hair) can all be very damaging. If you can, you should avoid using these products as much as possible. Try to towel dry your hair instead of using a blow-dryer, or use a blow dryer that can be put on a cooler setting. If you are planning to use a curling iron or a straightening iron, first apply a product that will protect your hair from heat damage. Be sure the product you use to prevent heat damage is thoroughly distributed before you begin to use your curling or straightening iron.

An ideal solution for curling hair is to use sponge curlers or other non-heated curling methods. Braiding your hair overnight can leave it looking wavy in the morning. Different-sized sponge curlers work well for achieving a variety of looks as well. Do not resign yourself to using a more dangerous method of curling or straightening your hair until you have seen what else is available for you and how you can make it work with your hair.

Beauty shops are eager to introduce you a wide variety of hair care and styling products that will help you keep your hair healthier. There are even an array of new shampoos and conditioners being developed specifically to prevent heat and other environmental damages.

Regular swimmers may have a more difficult time growing out their hair or preventing damage caused by the sun, chlorine, as well as other swimming pool chemicals. If swimming is your favorite form of exercise, of recreation, or if you swim competitively, not swimming anymore (or even swimming less often) is not even an option. If you want to keep your long hair healthy and keep swimming as long and as often as you want to, you may want to look for other options that will protect your hair from the many damages that swimming can cause.

There are hair-care products available on the market today designed especially for swimmers. Shampoos, conditioners, leave-in conditioners, and other products as well as certain home remedies abound. Even if you wear a swim cap on top of all the hair, as you know, your hair will still get wet with chemically treated water. One very simple first step you can take is to wet your hair with clean, soft water before getting in the pool. Many public pools display signs asking their patrons to shower before entering the pool. This is for all kinds of reasons, but one benefit to obeying the sign could make a significant difference in the condition of your hair. Hair is porous; it will become saturated with the regular water before you expose it to the chemically treated water. An extra step you can take is to use a small amount of conditioner on your wet hair before you swim. This will protect your hair longer from chemical damage, especially if you will be swimming in the chemically treated water for a long period of time.

As some people with blond hair have noticed, swimming can even damage your hair and turn it green! If this has happened to you, you may have tried to drench your hair in vinegar, cut off damaged areas or even get a really short haircut at the end of the swimming season. If hair with lighter pigmentation shows signs of chlorine damage by turning green - don’t assume that the damages in darker hair are less just because their pigmentation can mask the damage better. No matter who you are, if you swim and have long or medium length hair, you will need more than simple shampoos and conditioners to keep your hair healthy.

Some pools contain less (or lower levels of) strong chemicals than other pools, but public pools will almost always be on the higher end of chlorine and chemical treatment. People and/or establishments that own public pools will tend to use a system of overkill by means of chemical treatment to make sure that people do not get sick from bacteria growing in the pool. The water is usually clearer but it will sting your eyes more. What is stinging your eyes is the chemical treatment; the water is cleaner and definitely safer for your body, but not for your hair.

Long hair can be a truly stunning look, or it can make you look more unkempt than a shorter hairstyle. The difference is occasionally in the type of hair a person has, but often lies in the manner in which it is maintained. If people take care to keep their hair in good condition, the effort will most often have a very appealing outcome. Long hair should not be brushed more than twice a day. And when you do brush it is best to use a high quality vent brush.

With shorter hair, brushing from the scalp will help distribute the natural oils in your skin. However, with longer hair the oils from your scalp may not reach all the way to the ends of your hair. The further the hair is from the scalp, the more likely it is to have been damaged because it has been exposed to the elements longer. Adding conditioning products and other oils to your hair is more effective for distributing oil evenly for better condition throughout.

If you use a comb - to avoid tearing only use it on long hair when it is wet. Also avoid combing through your hair with your fingers. To prevent tangling, use a conditioner or, a conditioning system. A combination of conditioning in the shower and using a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner is usually best. Using oils in your hair at night is another very popular method for keeping long hair healthy. Apply the oil at night and then braid your hair before you go to sleep to keep it from breaking. If you apply the oil in the daytime, leave it in for a least an hour before you wash it out. Popular oils such as rosemary oil, lavender oil, cedar wood oil, and juniper berry oil are all excellent for treating your hair. There are many different kinds of leave-in daytime treatments.

Some leave-in treatments are perfect for extremely dry hair, and others are great for keeping hair that is naturally on the oily side in good condition. No matter what the label says, (because sometimes they are a bit deceiving) the more oily a hair conditioning substance is, the better it is for treating dry hair. The more cream-like the substance, the better it will work for treating and conditioning oily hair. Keep your long hair longer and longer. Achieve or maintain stunning length, in flawless condition when you take good care of your hair.

Some home remedies coincide with what beauty shops already do while others seem a bit more unusual. Beer and egg whites, for example, can make a difference in the condition of your hair - especially if you want it to feel softer and reduce any damage. You can use any number of oils to treat the hair. Heated oils are sometimes very effective as well. I have even heard that things like avocado paste, puddings, and chocolate are good for your hair. Some of this, as ridiculous as it may sound, is actually based on reasonable theory. For example: chocolate is full of antioxidants. Perhaps drinking green tea could help just as much, but making your head into a chocolate sundae with a splash of egg white can be more fun. And really, who hasn’t always secretly wanted to rinse their hair out with a couple of 40-ounce beers?

Find out what kinds of nutrients are good for your hair and try to use them more. Certain foods and even vitamin supplements can help you maintain healthy skin, hair, bones, and even fingernails. Just find out what works best for you - and if you try many different products, be sure to keep track of their efficacy on the condition of your hair. Tell your hairstylist what you are doing to your hair and how you are treating it - he or she may have excellent advice for you too.

Whether you plan to donate your long hair for human hair wigs, or if you simply love the luxurious look of long hair, keeping your hair strong and healthy is essential.

Hair Care - Easy Does It

Posted under Hair Care by Kenny on Wednesday 14 May 2008

Rough treatment of any kind - whether shampooing, brushing, or something else entirely - can damage individual hairs permanently. Unfortunately, once a strand is damaged, it can’t be repaired. To keep the damage from moving up the strand and compromising more of the hair, a haircut is your only option. To keep hair shiny, and voluminous, you must be mindful of how you treat strands. Abuse them and you will be repaid in split ends, frayed shafts, and brittleness.

Styles to avoid

Each person’s hair has a different personality. Except for the area around my face, where it’s straight, my hair likes to wave in zigzags down my back. Perhaps your hair’s natural inclination is to hang stick-straight or to leap away from your head in crazy curlicues. Fight your hair’s disposition and you end up in a battle of wills for hairstyle dominance. Sure, you can make your ringlets straight, but you’re going to have to beat them into submission with a relaxer service, or blow-dry them every morning, and perhaps you’ll even need to use a straightening iron.

If you want to live peacefully with your hair, you’ve got to learn to accept it’s natural tendencies, which brings me to this rule of thumb: The more a finished hairdo differs from your God-given hair, the rougher you’ll need to be with your strands. For example, to look curly, straight hair must undergo permanent waves, curling irons, or being shaped by rollers. To look straight, curly locks must submit to relaxing services, the blow-dryer, or straightening irons. To look full, thin hair is often set on rollers and heavily backcombed. And so on. So when it comes to hairstyles, the least damaging looks (and the easiest to achieve) are those that go with your hair’s natural flow.

Using hair ornaments wisely

I grew up wearing barrettes. My sister always had ponytails. Every morning before school, I sat on my mother’s bed. She would stand next to me and run a fine-tooth comb through my long, wavy, very tangled hair. After parting my hair, my mother gathered the tresses above each ear and forced the strands into metal drugstore barrettes. Then she would go to work on my sister’s hair: pulling the strands tight for a neat, smooth finish, then winding the ponytail holder again and again and again around the blonde pigtails until my sister’s coif was secure enough to withstand tag, monkey bars, kickball and grade school boys. When we finally stumbled from the house and onto the sidewalk, we were joined by neighborhood girls wearing beribboned hair clips, plastic headbands, red or yellow rubber bands, baubled ponytail holders,or small barrettes shaped like bows or puppies. As we walked toward the elementary school, one of us, then another would move a hand toward our heads - but our strands were so tightly fixed in place that nothing ever moved.

The average non-damaged strand is strong enough to suspend 3/5 oz (100 grams) in weight.

During our childhoods, it seemed essential that hair stayed put. Today we know better. When hair ornaments pull tresses tautly in place, or when they clamp down tightly around strands, they stress the hair shaft and weaken its cuticle layer. (I won’t even go into the headaches that incorrectly worn hair ornaments can give.) When using hair ornaments, keep locks somewhat loose, do not overstuff the barrette, clip, or ponytail holder, and don’t wear the same style day after day - another way to stress certain portions of the strand and cause breakage. Furthermore, when shopping for hair ornaments, look for barrettes, clips, and headbands with smooth finishes. Ponytail holders should be soft with no visible metal that can catch hair - and don’t ever use rubber bands on hair. They are notorious cuticle-strippers.

Summer Hair Care Tips for Dry Hair

Posted under Hair Care by Kenny on Wednesday 14 May 2008

Summer is approaching, time to wear short hairstyles and pay special attention to your hair care, because the sun and humidity is the worst enemy of your hair’s cuticles, causing damage that results in split ends, dry hair, frizzy hair or brittle hair. In healthy conditions, hair’s moisture content is approximately 10%, but sunlight has the same damaging effect as a hot blow dryer on your hair.

When hair’s moisture content drops below normal moisture, it is necessary to increase your hair’s ability to attract and retain natural moisture, preventing dry hair. Frizzy hair is a pain that can be prevented by shampooing your hair thoroughly and then applying a rinse out conditioner to eliminate static electricity, adding moisture and shine.

Keeping a hair care routine and short hairstyles during summer does help to prevent novice effects of sunlight. Additionally, wearing a hat at the beach, and applying after sun exposure such as a Sun Hair Repair Mask, keeps or replenishes the moisture of your hair. However, take in mind the aluminizing and voluminzing products make your hair take body and shine but do not hydrate it.

It is not mandatory to spend your summer on the beach, so if you stay home take a weekend to apply a good deep conditioner on your hair. Health care at home allows you to take an intensive treatment with jojoba oil, or any other product especially designed for dry hair or frizzy hair. Apply the warm treatment on the ends and frizziest parts of your hair, wrapping it in plastic, then go to bed and sleep the night through.

At the beach, make sure to wear your hat and if you and use a deep cleansing shampoo as soon as you get back home. This hair care is to prevent possible damage to your hair after a day exposing it to the sun and salty seawater. However, take in mind that severely dry hair may be burnt and cannot be fixed.

In this case, it is much better to trim the damaged sections of your hair off, particularly if you have frizzy hair, and opt to wear any of the modern short hairstyles to mask the problem while your hair grows again. One thing you should discontinue during summer is the use of blow dryers because summer heat is hot enough to damage it by itself and contains potential frizzies.

There are many hair care products to control frizzy hair, but be careful. Most of them contain silicone that coats your hair after several applications causing major harm instead of benefits to your hair. On the other hand, some hair conditioners only provide moisture to your hair while they are coating your hair as well. These products do not harm your hair, but do not help either.

Short hairstyles for summer time are the key to enjoying the sun and yet remember to continue religiously your hair care routine without missing your sunny days.

Tips To Achieve Salon Quality Hair

Posted under Hair Care by Kenny on Wednesday 14 May 2008

Your hair is one of your greatest accessories, but getting to look vibrant and healthy is often a struggle. To achieve this however you do not have to spend a small fortune in a salon; you just want to look like you did. Following and implementing a few basic tricks will get you well on your way to the beautiful shiny full looking locks you are after.

The easiest and yet most ignored tip is; keep your hair trimmed. Even if you are going through the tedious pains of trying to grow your hair out you should still be getting a trim every six weeks. Once you have your locks at the desired length continue to get a trim every eight weeks. Regularly trimming your hair helps prevent split ends and also makes your hair easier to manage and style. Easier styling means less fussing with damaging products and styling tools.

If you continue to have problems with split ends even though you are keeping your hair trimmed then it is probably lacking moisture and protein. If this is a constant issue for you try a silicone based product to help protect your hair shaft. Another way to combat split ends is, before using irons use a thermal protector to help seal in the moisture.

In addition when you are moisturizing your hair ensure that you are massaging your conditioner into your scalp. This action will not only put the conditioner where it needs to be to reach the hair root but also stimulates the scalp by promoting blood flow to the area. Massaging the scalp when washing and conditioning your hair assists hair health on the cellular level of the hair root where hair germination and growth takes place. The blood is responsible for carrying the nutrients to the hair root that are necessary for the growth of healthy hair. These nutrients are also necessary to ensure that the gland responsible for natural oil production are being fed. Stimulating the scalp helps to prevent hair loss and thinning.

Always use a high quality hair brush to avoid mechanical damage and promote hair health. A boar bristle brush is the ultimate in hair brushes, and yes they are more expensive to purchase but the good news is they last years and with the benefits to your hair they quickly pay for themselves. Boar bristle brushes have soft and flexible bristles which distribute the natural oils through your hair.

If you do not want to put out the cash for a boar bristle brush a nylon or plastic vent brush is a good choice. Ensure that you inspect and replace the brush as needed as damage to the tips of the bristles or missing bobbles will cause mechanical damage by tearing the hair shaft.

Last but not least; showering in hot water in no a good choice if you are concerned about the health of you hair. This is especially important if you have problems with oily hair; heat stimulates the scalp into producing oil. Also a cool rinse will help close the cuticle making it much easier to brush when you get out.

You do not have to spend a great deal of money to make your hair healthy and vibrant, it just takes a few small actions that any one can easily implement.

Notably hair salons also sell hair care products and they always claim their products are superior to the products you can purchase at grocery stores, however some experts have claimed in reviews that the hair salon products also overstate their benefits. The FDA only has regulation over the ingredients listed on the label thus the manufacturer can claim all sorts of benefits and their products don’t have to exactly provide the benefits.

Be wary when you read the shampoo bottle, especially when you discover the claims on repairing or nourishing damaged hair. This is because most shampoos can only provide temporary assistance with regard to the look of your hair. Some experts specify in reviews that they have doubts that natural ingredients found in shampoos can indeed be effective at cleaning your hair. Let’s take a look at some of the popular shampoos.
