If you want to donate your hair or sell your hair for use in making human hair wigs, keeping it in the very best possible condition is crucial. There are many techniques for keeping long hair healthy. The goals in cutting long hair or hair that is being grown out are different than the goals behind cutting hair for style. Even if you are not selling or donating it, most people who have long hair want it to look as beautiful as it can, and keeping it in good condition will be just as important to them.

Know what can damage your hair. If you know what kinds of things to avoid, because they are likely to worsen the condition of your hair, the more possible it is to significantly improve your hair. Environmental conditions, such as bright sunlight, heat, and dryness can contribute to damaged hair.

In addition, daily styling methods can also damage your hair. Using hair dryers, curling irons or flattening irons, hairspray and other styling products (especially when you do not wash the chemicals from styling products out of your hair) can all be very damaging. If you can, you should avoid using these products as much as possible. Try to towel dry your hair instead of using a blow-dryer, or use a blow dryer that can be put on a cooler setting. If you are planning to use a curling iron or a straightening iron, first apply a product that will protect your hair from heat damage. Be sure the product you use to prevent heat damage is thoroughly distributed before you begin to use your curling or straightening iron.

An ideal solution for curling hair is to use sponge curlers or other non-heated curling methods. Braiding your hair overnight can leave it looking wavy in the morning. Different-sized sponge curlers work well for achieving a variety of looks as well. Do not resign yourself to using a more dangerous method of curling or straightening your hair until you have seen what else is available for you and how you can make it work with your hair.

Beauty shops are eager to introduce you a wide variety of hair care and styling products that will help you keep your hair healthier. There are even an array of new shampoos and conditioners being developed specifically to prevent heat and other environmental damages.

Regular swimmers may have a more difficult time growing out their hair or preventing damage caused by the sun, chlorine, as well as other swimming pool chemicals. If swimming is your favorite form of exercise, of recreation, or if you swim competitively, not swimming anymore (or even swimming less often) is not even an option. If you want to keep your long hair healthy and keep swimming as long and as often as you want to, you may want to look for other options that will protect your hair from the many damages that swimming can cause.

Hair is porous; it will become saturated with the regular water before you expose it to the chemically treated water. An extra step you can take is to use a small amount of conditioner on your wet hair before you swim. This will protect your hair longer from chemical damage, especially if you will be swimming in the chemically treated water for a long period of time.

As some people with blond hair have noticed, swimming can even damage your hair and turn it green! If this has happened to you, you may have tried to drench your hair in vinegar, cut off damaged areas or even get a really short haircut at the end of the swimming season. If hair with lighter pigmentation shows signs of chlorine damage by turning green - don't assume that the damages in darker hair are less just because their pigmentation can mask the damage better. No matter who you are, if you swim and have long or medium length hair, you will need more than simple shampoos and conditioners to keep your hair healthy.

Some pools contain less (or lower levels of) strong chemicals than other pools, but public pools will almost always be on the higher end of chlorine and chemical treatment. People and/or establishments that own public pools will tend to use a system of overkill by means of chemical treatment to make sure that people do not get sick from bacteria growing in the pool. The water is usually clearer but it will sting your eyes more. What is stinging your eyes is the chemical treatment; the water is cleaner and definitely safer for your body, but not for your hair.

Long hair can be a truly stunning look, or it can make you look more unkempt than a shorter hairstyle. The difference is occasionally in the type of hair a person has, but often lies in the manner in which it is maintained. If people take care to keep their hair in good condition, the effort will most often have a very appealing outcome. Long hair should not be brushed more than twice a day. And when you do brush it is best to use a high quality vent brush.

With shorter hair, brushing from the scalp will help distribute the natural oils in your skin. However, with longer hair the oils from your scalp may not reach all the way to the ends of your hair. The further the hair is from the scalp, the more likely it is to have been damaged because it has been exposed to the elements longer. Adding conditioning products and other oils to your hair is more effective for distributing oil evenly for better condition throughout.

If you use a comb - to avoid tearing only use it on long hair when it is wet. Also avoid combing through your hair with your fingers. To prevent tangling, use a conditioner or, a conditioning system. A combination of conditioning in the shower and using a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner is usually best. Using oils in your hair at night is another very popular method for keeping long hair healthy. Apply the oil at night and then braid your hair before you go to sleep to keep it from breaking. If you apply the oil in the daytime, leave it in for a least an hour before you wash it out. Popular oils such as rosemary oil, lavender oil, cedar wood oil, and juniper berry oil are all excellent for treating your hair. There are many different kinds of leave-in daytime treatments.

Some leave-in treatments are perfect for extremely dry hair, and others are great for keeping hair that is naturally on the oily side in good condition. No matter what the label says, (because sometimes they are a bit deceiving) the more oily a hair conditioning substance is, the better it is for treating dry hair. The more cream-like the substance, the better it will work for treating and conditioning oily hair. Keep your long hair longer and longer. Achieve or maintain stunning length, in flawless condition when you take good care of your hair.

Some home remedies coincide with what beauty shops already do while others seem a bit more unusual. Beer and egg whites, for example, can make a difference in the condition of your hair - especially if you want it to feel softer and reduce any damage. You can use any number of oils to treat the hair. Heated oils are sometimes very effective as well. I have even heard that things like avocado paste, puddings, and chocolate are good for your hair. Some of this, as ridiculous as it may sound, is actually based on reasonable theory. For example: chocolate is full of antioxidants. Perhaps drinking green tea could help just as much, but making your head into a chocolate sundae with a splash of egg white can be more fun. And really, who hasn't always secretly wanted to rinse their hair out with a couple of 40-ounce beers?

Find out what kinds of nutrients are good for your hair and try to use them more. Certain foods and even vitamin supplements can help you maintain healthy skin, hair, bones, and even fingernails. Just find out what works best for you - and if you try many different products, be sure to keep track of their efficacy on the condition of your hair.
